Game Day: Devils vs. Oilers

The New Jersey Devils will be looking to refill their prescription for success when they pay a visit to “The Drug Store” tonight to take on the Edmonton Oilers.
Playing their final game of a four-game road trip, the Devils will look to put their stretch-drive into high gear tonight, after dropping a 5-3 decision Friday night, to the Calgary Flames and former coach Brent Sutter. Joy-zee forfeited lost its grip on first place in its division to Sidney Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins, on the heels of a 3-6-1 record over their last 10 games.
Ryan Whitney’s Edmonton Oilers, meanwhile, will look to with consecutive tilts, after dealing a serious blow to Minnesota’s play-off hopes Friday night with a 2-1 SO victory thanks to a pair of goals from Mike Comrie (one in regulation; one in the sixth round of the SO).
Whitney will likely continue to be paired with defensive partner Tom Gilbert. after Oilers’ Head Coach Pat Quinn seemed to find some chemistry between the two blueliners in Whitney’s first game in copper and blue silks Friday night.
Newcomer Ryan Jones, however, may not be back in the lineup tonight, after a knee-on-knee collision with “The Boogie Man” – Minnesota’s Derek Boogaard during Friday’s game. Boogaard has since been given a two-game suspension from NHL disciplinarian, Colin Campbell.
The hit was unquestionably dirty, despite Jones’ attempts to quash the media’s suggestions to the contrary. That sort of garbage is a stark contrast to the type of hockey we all recently enjoyed during the Olympic tournament. Arguably, Olympic hockey is a short tournament, which engages fans across several continents for a limited period of time. The NHL, however, must begin to send a message to GMs around the league, that meatheads like Boogaart are dinosaurs.
Nobody loves physical play in the game like me – just ask my Pee Wee squad. But I subscribe to clean, physical, textbook body checking, something meatheads like Boogaart will never embrace.
I look forward to your responses on the Crude Talk Message Board.
Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice Oiler fans!
