Iginla And Toskala Lead Flames To Win

In a bit of a surprising move Brent Sutter gave Miikka Kiprusoff the day off as the Flames went into Minnesota to face the Wild. Vesa Toskala got his first start as a member of the Calgary Flames and was solid turning away 27 of 29 Wild shots posting the win in Calgary’s 5-2 triumph.

I am very happy to type the following sentence… Jarome Iginla showed up this afternoon and led the Flames with three goals and an assist in the win. The captain staked hard the whole game and helped create chances as the first line of the Flames dominated for most of this game.

Rene Bourque also had a solid afternoon getting top line minutes again with a goal and three helpers. Matt Stajan played well up the middle, and the defense core was good most of the night with the possible exception of Ian White still looking for his underpants from a Mikko Koivu great chance that actually ended up turning into a goaltender interference penalty.

As for the Wild Niklas Backstrom was average in the net for the wild and never looked comfortable getting caught deep in his net a couple of times. However Guillaume Latendresse was excellent for the wild scoring twice and both of them were absolute beauties and pure goal scorers goals. Note to the Flames. You may wish to game plan for him next time out.

As for the not so good for the Flames. David Moss is certainly trying to play his way out of the lineup. If I were running the team I would be inserting Backlund back into the lineup in his place to play with Conroy and Hagman. The only thing that scared me about Vesa Toskala today was the lack of rebound control. He certainly made the saves he needed to make and a couple tough ones on top of that, but he did make more work for himself than need be.

Huge game for Calgary Tuesday night as they march into Detroit to take on the Red Wings who should be flying high after handing the Black Hawks a shocking 5-4 loss. It was shocking in the fact of how poorly Huet played today. I said this in the last blog and it stands true again. The Flames MUST win on Tuesday. As important as it is to catch and pass Detroit, they also need to draw a couple more teams back into striking range.

For those of you following the rumor about the Coyotes moving to Winnipeg (as opposed to the Thrasher a couple weeks ago) there is some smoke to the rumor but nothing solid that I have been able to turn up. I wouldn’t discount it completely yet, but I don’t know how close to reality it actually is right now. If I find any news for you it will be in a blog or on twitter!

Have a good one!
