Today the Los Angeles Lakers lost to the Orlando Magic in a very heated and passionate battle that ended with the Lakers losing 96-94, the first time they have lost 3 games in a row since they acquired Pau Gasol in 2008.
The floods of messages that came to my Blackberry with Laker haters taunting and acting like they just lost the championship, really gave me a chuckle. If they lost to the Nets, then okay but calm down they only lost three games.
Let’s take a trip down memory lane for a sec.
The 2008 Boston Celtics lost three straight on the road against Denver, Golden State, and Phoenix. Then they went on a 10-gm win streak and won the championship.
In 2007, the San Antonio Spurs lost four straight games in the season. They went home with a ring.
2006, Dwayne Wade and the Miami Heat lost four in a row AND three in a row during their season, losing 5-out-7 on the road. The championship trophy then moved to South Beach that year.
San Antonio won their third championship of the decade in 2005 and lost three straight games on the road, ironically also in the month of March like the Lakers. May be it’s a sign.
Hot head Rasheed Wallace and the Detroit Pistons had quite a bit of losing streaks in 2004. They lost three in a row, then four in a row, then three in a row, then an awful six in a row. On top of that, they still won the championship, slapping up the Lakers 4-1 in the final series.
Should I continue this game? How about one more for the road?
The Lakers completed their 3-peat Championship run in 2002 where they lost three in a row. 2-out-of-3 games were at home, which is even worse than losing on the road. And did what? Yes, won the championship.
So the lesson learned, is that all great teams go through dry spells. It’s a good thing that the Lakers have received a heat check, better now then later. Accordingly to history, this slump just means their still on pace to win a championship. So to all the Laker haters rejoicing over this minute skid, think before you speak.
