Headshots and ESPN

This blog is fueled by a few things: Marc Savard getting hit in the head by Matt Cooke and ESPN opinion guys.

Being busy as a college student really hampers my ability to watch ESPN shows regularly and I used to love them. On Around the Horn and PTI the opinion guys were talking about how they found Matt Cooke’s hit to be dirty which I can agree with. What I had a problem with is how they compared NHL hockey to Olympic hockey and how they don’t allow fighting in Olympic hockey and how the NHL should make moves to become like the Olympics.

A main opinion was how if you remove fighting and the need for it in hockey you can get rid of players getting hurt by these terrible hits. I think what the ESPN announcers fail to grasp is how important hockey tradition is. Fighting isn’t some type of barbarian brawl or gladiatorial games meant to satiate the blood lust of the fans. Fighting is for sticking up for your teammates, giving your team energy, and policing hockey. I believe that if you get rid of the instigator penalty you’ll see less hits because guys will get fought for what they do.

What are your opinions on this subject?

As someone of very strong European descent, I’ve always wanted the NHL to be more like international competition in terms of basic rule structure. However, I don’t want them to get rid of fighting. I do, however, feel that there should be some form of control on it, as in today’s NHL, clean but big hits always seem to end up with fights that really don’t need to occur.

Say what you want about the Cooke hit, but if it doesn’t even draw a penalty, how about the Bruins just wait until their next matchup against the Pens to exact revenge?

Or at the very least, perhaps we give an automatic game misconduct to a player who initiates the fight?

My reasoning is that there have been far too many staged fights and on many nights, the same two clowns go at it more than once – which is a clear indicator that the fight has nothing to do with the game being played, but rather more to do with the “goons” in question seeking to increase their street-cred or whatever…

European hockey allows fighting, but it’s rare. The easiest answer to ALL of the NHL’s on-ice problems is investment into IIHF sized rinks. You’d see a dramatic decline in fighting, injuries and even goons overall…

I think you’re right that bigger rinks means less players who only play dirty but I just don’t like the idea. I like the small rinks and I really enjoy physical play. Tough physical hockey seems like hockey of old and with the lockout really restricting it I don’t want to see even more physical play go away.

Yeah, the stages fights don’t really help anybody but retaliatory fights seem right to me. And I think if there was a precedent set that if you deliver a dirty hit you get fought and clean hits you let go the players would get that and adopt it. Either the NHL needs to make the league enforce rules stricter or let the players govern themselves.

I must be older than you because I don’t remember hockey as being as violent as it is today… For the record, I am 37 as of this past Saturday.

Players will never be allowed to police themselves again, that’s a sad fact. Players are simply less responsible than they once were. They don’t mind losing a few games’ pay because they make enough money to be sending out stimulus packages to smaller nations in this time of economic downturn.

The reality is that bigger ice would allow skilled players more space to keep out of the way of these cheap hits, and would erradicate players who can’t skate from the game, which is the core of the problem in the first place. Most of the cheap-shots are done by guys who can’t keep up. Exception this year would be Mike Richards. Other than that, it’s a bunch of no-talent hacks. Bigger ice would make for a faster, more entertaining game. Imagine if the Olympics had bigger ice this year, that woulda been friggin amazing – more than it already was.

Everybody talks about how in hockey of old there was this sense of honor when it came to playing and they wouldn’t hurt players because they didn’t have to. I suppose in today’s game, and it’s really unfortunate, but the only way some guys make it is if they can hit and fight. There are been a fair amount of dirty hits from guys who do more than check this year or injures that might have been unnecessary. It’s a faster paced game now than it ever was. I know big ice would change this but I’m not ready to adopt the bigger rink sizes.

          1. Dan Rakusan Mar 8 20108:30 pm

I don’t think pure economics will allow for bigger ice, but if the NHL wanted to be pro-active about the injury issues, they’d at least consider it. It wouldn’t take much to convince the PA to get on board, as they are protecting interest of the players, who would also likely be open to at least discussing it. Finances are the only issue, as it would cost a lot of money to retro-fit arenas with bigger ice, and would cause a smaller seating capacity in arenas that didn’t pre-plan for it (many have)…

I’m not arguing for or against change, I just propose what I think would work…

Dan you and I are close on age so I don’t expect you to ‘remember’ this, but hockey was ALWAYS violent. And quite possibly worse in the past.

“Imagine the worst stick-swinging incident of the modern NHL era, complete with heavy wooden sticks and helmets nowhere in sight.

Voila, you have St. Louis’ Wayne Maki opposite “Terrible” Ted Green of the Boston Bruins, circa 1969-70 in Ottawa.

In the midst of a pre-season game, Maki knocked Green down from behind. The latter retaliated by slashing Maki, who hit the ice. Maki speared Green, who again sent Maki flying. The pair soon exchanged vicious slashes until Maki clubbed Green over the head, fracturing his skull.

Green needed three major operations to save his life and had a steel plate inserted in his head. Maki was suspended for 30 days and Green for 12 games when he returned to action one year later. Assault charges were filed against both players, who were later acquitted. ”

If you want to add the Bobby Clarke slash on Kharlamov etc etc. It’s always been a violent game.

Could you imagine if fighting was illegal so the best way to get a guy back would be with a ‘questionable’ cross check to the face or something like that?
