Flames Steal Two Points

Through the first two periods of this game it looked like the same old Flames team where you had to wonder about the compete level. I don’t know what happened in the second intermission but WOW! The Flames showed up to play in the third period completely dominating the Wings en route to a 4-2 victory to slip into 8th and the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
The first period was a bit of a snooze fest in the first period with both teams playing fairly conservative but Detroit had the better of the play. Both Miikka Kiprusoff and Jimmy Howard were solid in the first leading to no scoring.
The second period started off well for the Flames with Daymond Langkow scoring a bit of a lucky goal after getting a great bounce off of the glass right on to his stick and he wired a slap shot over Howard’s shoulder to make it 1-0 Calgary. Then the Flames collapsed later on led by the captain who had a partial breakaway and decided not to move his feet which led to no real scoring chance and a turnover which led to a fairly soft goal by Pavel Daytsuk to tie the score at one. Follow that up with a text book deflection by Tomas Holmstrom on the PP and it was quickly 2-1 Wings after two, and you got that ‘oh here we go again feeling.’
Off to the third and someone lit a fire under Jarome Iginla’s backside during the break because he moved his feet and got to the dirty parts of the ice which lead to his goal tying the game at two banging home a Rene Bourque rebound. Then ninety seconds later Bourque deflected an Iginla shot past Jimmy Howard to make it 3-2 and all the momentum was going the Flames way. Finally the Flames capped it when Chris Higgins (no really) went end to end deking out three Wings and roofing it… errr OK he shot it 180 feet into an empty net for his first goal as a Flame! Making the final score 4-2 Calgary.
My thoughts after this one are really the team got lucky that Detroit did not come out with their ‘A’ game either. Other than the softy I though Kipper was solid and deserved the win. Chris Higgins finally got one as a Flame and you could see the relief when that puck went in. And finally if the Flames can play like they did in the 3rd period there are a team to be feared come playoff time.
Next up for the Flames is a home date against the Ottawa Senators. Needless to say this is a big game for the Flames and since I am not daring to break any superstitions they MUST WIN this next game.
Have a good one!
