Why Duke Will Go Far in March

Yes, March Madness is finally here. It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

The big dance is filled with so many unexpected turns and twists, which makes it one of the most compelling sports tournaments to watch.

While everyone is filling out their brackets, I noticed EVERYONE has Duke out early. Why is there so much hate?

Okay, yes their track record has not been all that great in past years. They lost in the first round in 2007 then lost in the second round in 2008 and again lost last year in the sweet sixteen.

C’mon guys look at the trend. They are only getting better year after year, not worse.

I think people are drinking the haterade because they don’t like the preppy white boy appeal that the Duke team has but remember the movie ‘White boys CAN jump’.

With a 29-5 record going into the NCAA tournament, the Duke Blue Devils just finished winning their 22nd Conference Championship to go along with their 23rd ACC tournament title.

They arguably have one of the best trios in the NCAA right now with Jon Scheyer, Nolan Smith, and Kyle Singler. Not to mention having an amazing supporting cast with such players like Mason and Miles Plumlee and Andre Dawkins.

Also, with only a 7-hour drive from Duke University to Jacksonville, Florida, means that the Cameron Crazies will be deep in attendance, giving the Blue Devils a great advantage to go far in the tourney.

By far, this is the best Duke squad that we’ve seen in years. I’ve seen the passion in Coach K’s eyes on TV leading up to the big dance. He wants it bad and so does the team. And today starts the road of proving all the naysayers wrong.

My fav team is of course the Lakers, and I will rep them til the death. I was an ncaa division I athlete for four years, as I played soccer at UAB. So if I'm not watching sports, I'm probably out playing a pick up soccer game somewhere. Sports = Life

I’ll give duke this…they had the bracket gods on their side b/c they in by far the EASIEST group. The road to a title for them is not even close to as difficult as the path that the other number 1 seeds will embark upon.

Secondly, shyer gets tooooo much credit for nothing. He’s a good player, but he is not deserving of the hype that the media surrounds him with.

Duke will have a tough test against Louiville and possibly texas tech if they can get pas them,. After that its nothing but smooth sailing…

But back to reality, it won’t happen cuz they wont get past the louiville sluggers! U heard it here first

Loyal Duke fan here since they upset UNLV in 1991
I have Duke winning it all in most of my brackets and to the hater above I hope you are not a Kentucky fan saying that because the refs gave them a handicap all season. Kentucky was tackling players in the SEC Title game. My other favorite team is Ohio State which has the best player in the country (Evan Turner).
I do not like Duke’s team and think they over achieved this season.

This past Tuesday Duke added another wing to next season’s stable. Junior College wing Carrick Felix (6-6, Southern Idaho) committed to Duke (1st ever Junior college transfer in duke history). I believe this moves Duke firmly into the top 3 next season in terms of preseason rankings. If Kyle Singler comes back, Duke should be the #1 ranked team in the nation to start the season. Look at this potential starting line-up

    Nolan Smith
    Carrick Felix
    Kyle Singler
    Ryan Kelly
    Mason Plumlee

Plus they have Seth Curry (Stephen Curry’s Brother) who transferred and sat out this season.

Kyrie Ivring, Tyler Thornton, Andre Dawkins, Miles Plumlee on the bench.

Next Season is definitely a National Championship Run

    Great piece Nadine!
When you have 3 players averaging 17.7 to 18.5 points a game that kind of depth will take you far in this tourney. There are too many top teams that rely on player so for me that is a huge advantage for Duke. I still think Nova is a bad match up for Duke if they were to meet in the Elite 8.

I have Duke winning the championship in my bracket as well, but that is only because I am a huge Duke fan. It’s hard to be objective and pick against your own team.

Everyone has pointed out already that Duke has an easy bracket. Villanova might provide a challenge for them; possibly even Baylor. However, I can see Duke getting to the Final Four pretty easily. Their problem is that they do not have a dominant big man (and have not since Shelden Williams, or even Carlos Boozer). Zoubek has stepped up and given the team much needed rebounds and some offensive production (although, generally against worse teams).

What gives me hope, though, is Duke’s defensive ability. Nobody likes to watch defensive, low-scoring games (except me), but those are the ones that Duke needs to win. With three big guys (Plumlee squared and Zoubek), it provides the team with a great opportunity to dish out fouls instead of giving up easy baskets. Defense is especially important because at any given time Scheyer, Singler, and/or Smith can go cold (and Scheyer really did during the ACC Tournament). That scares me.

Anyway, that is my (hopefully objective) take on the Blue Devils. I really hope they go far, and I will be rooting for them throughout.

I know people hate duke because of their program. I have followed duke since 1982 and this team has the ambition to take the title. They will literally take it from the rest because of the will to win for coach K. As you have seen so far in the brackets the competion that sailed through the year is finally meeting some real talent. Duke actually practices against real talent everyday. This will give them the edge when it comes down to the final shot. Hate them if you like but it is hard to beat talent, will and a great coach.
