No in depth breakdowns of the game tonight because they weren’t needed. The Flames beating the Sharks by a score of 4-3 was actually quite generous to San Jose. Calgary really took the play to the visitors tonight and if it wasn’t for a freak goal in the third when Backlund tucked it past Kiprusoff into the slot for an easy goal the game would have never been close.
With the win the Calgary Flames pull ahead of the… Oh wait! This just in! The Oilers found a way to cough up a regulation win pulling Detroit back into a tie with the Flames for the final playoff spot.
Only the bleeding Oilers could find a way to screw up an easy chip out to ice a game. If you didn’t see it you have to find it on youtube. Detroit dumps the puck in with ten seconds left in the third, and all the Oilers defenceman had to do was bang it off the boards out, hell even icing it would have worked. BUT NO! In true Edmonton fashion the defenceman falls on the puck because he clearly thought he was Johnny Bower and would get a whistle, so Detroit digs it out and while the rest of the Oilers were staring blankly at this bone head play the Wings throw it cross crease to a wide open Brian Rafalski to tie the game with TWO TENTHS OF A SECOND LEFT!
Fortunately the Oilers did win in a shootout limiting the Wings to one point they had no business getting. With that point and the Flames win Detroit and Calgary share the final playoff spot in the Western Conference and are now within 4 points of Nashville and LA and only 5 points behind the Colorado Avalanche for the lucrative 5th seed and a match up with the Winnipeg Jets errr Phoenix Coyotes.
Next up for the Flames is an afternoon game in Minnesota against the Wild on Sunday. Needless to say every game now is a must win for Calgary.
Have a good one! And yes Billy the Oilers still suck!
