Flyers Without Carter, No Time For Excuses

With all the negatives pointed the Flyers direction lately one has to think they’re do for something good to happen. First, they lost goaltender Michael Leighton, after losing starter Ray Emery. Leaving them with veteran Brian Boucher to lead them to the playoffs. Then word came down Monday that Jeff Carter would be out 3-4 weeks with a non-displaced fracture in his foot [1].

Losing your leading scorer is undoubtedly a blow to the Flyers. Though it shouldn’t be the end-all-be-all. If it is, and they fail to make the playoffs as a direct result of losing Carter to injury, then they weren’t good enough to make it anyhow. One guy doesn’t and can’t make a team, not a successful one anyway.

With the expectations put on this Flyers club coming into the year it’s no mystery they’ve underachieved.  However, they now sit tied for the 6th seed in the East, able to control their own destiny. A luxury which many teams vying for a playoff spot lack. Which is something the Flyers must use to their advantage in a time where nothing seems to be going their way.

Good teams dig deep during tough times. This Flyer team can not be any different, and they haven’t shown signs of putting their heads down, yet. The offense is struggling, though it’s not from a lack of shots or chances. Again, one has to think that eventually out-shooting their opponents on a nightly basis will lead to some positive results. For the Flyers they have to hope that scoring touch doesn’t return too late.

The Flyers have plenty of capable scorers who are still healthy. It’s time for Mike Richards, Claude Giroux, James Van Riemsdyk, Danny Briere, Simon Gagne and Scott Hartnell to step up and will this team into the playoffs.

Flyers to Call Up Laliberte

According to Flyers writer Anthony SanFilippo [2] the Flyers plan on recalling David Laliberte [3]. Though, he’s coming off an injury and may not be available until the weekend. If Laliberte isn’t ready to go the Flyers will go with Stefan Legein [4]. Until then however, Ville Leino will continue to be in the line-up.
