The Penguins tried to go into Detroit once again and steal another victory over the red hot Red Wings, but it was not to be on this night. Jimmy Howard stopped 33 shots on goal in a 3-1 victory over the defending champs in a re-match from last years Stanley Cup Final.
Chris Kunitz scored the only Pens goal at 16:54 of the 2nd period granted many people believe this slump is due to the absence of Malkin… all i have to say to that is, theres no “I” in team, but this game was not without controversy with over 20 minutes in penalties handed out. Filppula and Zetterburg had the goals with Bertuzzi and Lidstrom drawing the assists as well as Filppula and Zetterburg themselves with a few helpers.
Another note to pass on Datsyuk has been doing very well since the return of Johan Franzen to the line-up, Datsyuk has 12 points in the last 11 games that Franzen has been back. Datsyuk was struggling without Franzen, he is 35th in overall points at 60 points on the season, while last year he finished with 97 points and 4th in the NHL that is a significant drop, with very few games left i doubt Datsyuk will post those numbers this year, but I am sure he will still climb.
Now looking at the standings, Detroit sits 4 points ahead of Calgary, however still in 8th spot only 3 more points could bump them into 5th providing Nashville and L.A. loses there coming games, and now looking ahead any of the top 4 seeds Chicago, Phoenix, San Jose or Vancouver could end up playing the Wings in the first round, a series against any of the 4 would make this hockey fan happy as long as the Wings make it, right? Nashville hosts the Stars, while the Ducks go into Calgary tonight, While the Red Wings play host to St. Louis. Another important game to watch is the L.A. vs Colorado game tomorrow another key game that could determine where Detroit finishes. It should be another exciting week but right now its good to be a Wings fan.
