Reyes Thyroid a Real Pain in the Neck

Posted By Mark Reichman On Mar 24 2010 @ 9:24 pm In New York Mets | No Comments

Carlos Beltran needs a new leg and Jose Reyes needs a new thyroid and Johan Santana needs a new shoulder and David Wright needs a killer instinct. As the Amazins stumble down their yellow brick road of injury woes, Met fans can only hope the dark clouds of this spring will blow away by opening day.

Jose Reyes is back working out with the Mets after a couple of weeks recuperating at his home.  Reyes told SNY he took in two movies a day during his down time.  Reyes and the Mets are still in “one day at a time” mode when vaguely discussing when Jose might actually be in the lineup.  Reyes also told SNY he has to give up seafood, which would be devastating news to me.

The wildly positive optimist in me thinks maybe the Reyes thyroid scare could humble Jose into being more of a positive team player on the Mets when he returns. I’ll never expect Jose to be a prototypical leadoff hitter who walks a lot, but perhaps some greater patience at the plate isn’t too much to ask for coming into 2010.

Santana meanwhile does seem to be coming into shape with a solid performance in Grapefruit League action this morning.

Meanwhile my most positive image of the spring was Sandy Koufax imparting some of his wisdom to wildly inconsistent Oliver Perez.  I know Ollie actually got shelled his next start after chat with Koufax, but there’s still hope that some type of osmosis could have taken place.

Any Met fan will tell you that the Perez-Maine-Pelfrey spots in the rotation have a serious potential to be the Mets’ achilles heel this season.  Or conversely, a great season can be expected if these guys ever get it together at the same time.  Any baseball expert will also tell you that the Mets “don’t have” a #2 starter, which is a stone cold diss on whoever takes the ball the day after Johan Santana.  Maybe one day this season one of the Permapelfrey trio steps up and claims that #2 starter mantle.
