Random thoughts on a rainy monday

The Predators managed to totally crush my heart on Saturday, losing in a 11 round shootout to the Detroit Redwings in front of a full house at the Stone.  Luckily, the Miami Redhawks beat Michigan in double overtime yesterday to cheer me up.  Love and honor!

Period 1

20:00 Well, here we are again.  Predators against Wings.  It’s a tale as old as time for these two clubs.  My keys to the game?  Predators MUST play solid defensive hockey combined with a ferocious forecheck.  In other words, they have to play the perfect game.  The crowd is already blood frenzied from the look of things.  Time to drop that puck.

19:00 Jason Arnott has a concussion.  Not the news the Predator’s wanted.  I doubt he will be back before the playoffs.  Arnott has a bad history of concussions so this is about as bad of news as the Predators could get.

17:41 The Predators are playing too fancy right now.  Too many passes, not enough shots.

17:14 Dustin Boyd has a glorious scoring chance; the crowd is chanting “Redwings suck.” I am smiling.  Predators are out shooting the Wings 6-0.

15:22 Trotz says you play to win for 60 minutes.  Predators have struggled playing a full 60 minutes.  All I can think is Herm Edwards screaming “YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!”  Now I need to wash my brain with bleach.  Too many scary thoughts about Herm Edwards coaching hockey.

12:34 The game has really opened up.  Oh, the insanity!  Cardiac arrest inevitable.

11:37 Holding penalty!  The “Flower Play” coming up.

10:46 Well, at least they are shooting.  That’s a good start.

9:37 That was an ok power play.

5:15 Way too many close calls.  Detroit is putting the pressure on.

4:37 Another power play for us….let’s go PREDS!

2:52 Another failure on the power play.  What a waste.  Nashville needs a new power play coach.  I hope it is our announcer, Terry Crispy.  The guy knows how to coach, and more importantly, his power play philosophy is to shoot the puck from anywhere at anytime.  I like that idea.

:51 Martin Erat is injured.  I doubt we will see him again.  I am no doctor, but it lookd like his knee or ankle failed.  Predators on the power play.  This doesn’t look good.  Once again, I stress.  David Poile should have gotten scoring help during the trade deadline.  You just knew one of Arnott, Dumont, Erat, or Legwand was going to get hurt.  Looks like Arnott and Erat are the victims.  Absolutely enfuriating.

End of 1. So far play has been pretty even.  The Predators started off better, but Detroit has answered the call.  So far I would say the first period has been a wash.  The Predators can’t do a darn thing on the power play, but what else is new.

Period 2

18:31 Erat back on the ice.  You gotta give this guy credit for “toughing” this one out.

16:58 “The Cube” takes a penalty. Wings on the power play.  Waiting for the hammer to fall.  I don’t mean Hamhuis.

13:21 The ice is just plain awful tonight.  The puck is just bouncing everywhere.  Neither team can really set up their plays or pass tape to tape.  Should be a low scoring game.

10:23 Energy drinks+ hockey= disastrous to your heart.

9:16 Marcel Goc saves a goal!  The puck got behind Pekka Rinne but Goc was there to sling it down ice.  Good news, no goal.  Bad news, “The Cube” takes another penalty, and we are on the PK again.

End of 2 Well, that wasn’t pretty.  We are getting outshot.  That period showed a 17-6 shot differential favoring Detroit.  In desperation, I call my girlfriend downstairs to watch the game with me.  Guys, take note: the Hockey Gods favor the female gender.  Seriously.  Chances are your team will win if you have a little daughter and/or girlfriend watching the game with you. I have a theory.  Men are already lucky if they have a woman in their life and this good karma effects the outcome of the games.  Why do you think luck is a lady?   Exactly …there is a method to my madness.  I digress.

Period 3

14:10 Nick Spaling has been on fire tonight.  The Predators rookie has been an absolute force on the forecheck.  I am very very happy with Spaling.  Same thing with Colin Wilson, though I think Wilson misses Jason Arnott to open up some place for him to shoot.

10:31 Teams are just trading chances left and right.  I am literally having to lay on my floor in order to remain cool.

6:24 Pekka Rinne is coming up huge for his team.  Come to think of it, so is Jimmy Howard.

4:39 It’s confirmed, Howard has sold is soul to the devil in order to play at this level.  Legwand received the puck as he screamed down the slot.  He ripped a shot that looked like a tally, but NO.  Jimmy Howard ruined my dreams.  Why Jimmy?  Why?  After this save, I let out a low moan of pain.  My girlfriend (completely ignoring the game while she studies, not that thats a bad thing mind you) gives me the infamous eye roll and starts laughing at my sound effects.

End 3rd Really have nothing else to say at this point.  This game is going to a shootout.  Both goalies are just plyaing in a league of their own tonight.

This thing lasted 11 rounds before Niklas Kronwall stuffed one home five hole.  I am starting to think we should send Shea Weber out there and let him rip a slap shot ala Brian Rolston.

So on that heart breaking note, the Predators fall to the Redwings 1-0 in a shootout.  The Predators play tonight against the Florida Panthers.  Puck drops at 7:30 Eastern.  Take care!

NOTE: While this post was ready yesterday, I was busy watching NCAA hockey.  Though the Predators blew the Detroit game, my Miami Redhawks were able to take revenge on the entire state of Michigan by beating them 3-2 to clinch a Frozen Four berth!  Thank you Miami for letting me taste sweet revenge!
