Devastating Loss for Flyers; Playoff Chances in Jeopardy

Jaroslav Halak withstood a dominating third period by the Flyers and held on for a 1-0 shut out Friday night. Making the Flyers already dwindling playoff even more in doubt.

After an absolutely brutal loss to the New York Islanders on Thursday night the Flyers came out with a noticeable jump Friday. If not for Halak the Flyers could have easily won the game by three or more goals.

Youngsters Claude Giroux and James Van Riemsdyk had stellar games, each getting to countless loose pucks and flying around the ice in general.

Even worse news for the Flyers, the New York Rangers are currently winning as I type this , a win that will take them to 80 points, only two behind the Flyers. Why does that matter? Well the Flyers and Rangers will play each other twice including the last game of the season, a game which is shaping up to mean a great deal.

A loss like this can hurt a team more than getting blown out. Giving everything you have and still coming up on the losing end, especially when you think of the magnitude of the game. The Flyers needed this game, and they needed it badly.

The Flyers have no one to blame but themselves for the position they are in now. Now practically every game is must win. This is the time of year when games like Thursday nights loss to the Isles hurt the worst. Games against teams you should beat. The Flyers have been noticeable flat at inopportune times. Seemingly playing down to their competition, or sometimes seeming disinterested. Teams like that don’t deserve to make the playoffs, and the Flyers are a perfect example of that right now.

The job doesn’t get any easier as they’ll face the defending Western Conference champs the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday. The Flyers now have only four games remaining, four games in which they’ll need to come away with 8 points. Their season depends on it.
