Avalanche fall to Flames

Well it is official, the Colorado Avalanche are on the brink of missing the playoffs after a great first half of the season.
In perhaps the biggest game of the NHL season to date, the Avs fell 2-1 to the Calgary Flames on Friday night.
Backstopped by a 35 save performance from Miika Kiprusoff, the Flames pulled even with the Avs on 89 points but have fewer wins thus remaining in 9th place.
When it comes to the NHL’s tie-breaking system, the Avs hold all the cards as they currently have more wins than the Flames and also own the better head-to-head record between the teams which is the second tie-breaker.
The Avs were thoroughly dominated in the small aspects of the game. Take the faceoff circle for example, Colorado won a mere 34% of the face-offs on Friday and it led to several chances for the Flames.
Looking at the remaining schedule, the key game could be against Calgary’s cross-province rival, the Edmonton Oilers. It is by far the most winnable game remaining in the Avs schedule and with one game in hand on the Flames it is a game they can ill afford to lose.
You will find very few and I mean very few opportunities to see Flames fans cheering for the Edmonton Oilers to do them a favour but that will be one of them.
The panic button shouldn’t be pushed quite yet in Colorado, but another couple of losses could see the Avs playoff hopes go down in flames to the Flames.
