Sens lay an egg on the Island and Kovalev continues to float!!

With three games left in the regular season, the Ottawa Senators can’t afford to have another horrible game like that of this afternoon. The Sens fell 4-1 to the NY Islanders in a lacklustre affair. So instead of focussing on a pathetic game this afternoon lets look ahead to the last three games of the season and what Ottawa needs to do heading into the playoffs.
Outside of Brian Elliott, it was a complete no-show by this team so it would be hard to single out anyone for failing to play to expectations. But it has to be concerning to the coaching staff that Alex Kovalev continues to float game in and out, yet is given quality icetime. It is about time that head coach Cory Clouston holds Kovalev accountable. He has one goal and no assists since the Olympic break and has shown no signs of snapping out of his funk. It would be nice to see him mix in a solid effort sometime soon. This is getting ridiculous and I am sure not just the fans in this city but some of his teammates are starting to wonder if they can count on him come playoff time. With today’s loss the Sens can finish no higher than 5th and are destined for a first round match-up with New Jersey or Pittsburgh. To defeat either the Devils or Pens it will take a TOTAL team effort which includes Kovalev bringing his “A” game to the playoffs. They can’t have Kovalev posting a minus three and having three giveaways in the stats column to go with one shot on goal.
Another Sens player that really needs to elevate his game in a hurry is Mike Fisher. Fisher is given a free pass in this town far too much and it’s about time someone calls him out for his average play. Matt Cullen has been far more effective than Fisher since being acquired and this team will need Fisher bringing a much more consistent game. Since the Olympic break Fisher has 2G, 4A and is a minus nine in those 15 games. Any other player would get ragged on by the local media, instead nobody has the balls to call out Fisher in this city!! He better elevate his game in a hurry!!
Ottawa takes on the Florida Panthers this Tuesday and then off to Tampa Bay on Thursday before returning home for the final game of the season against the Buffalo Sabres. Anything short of two wins out of their last three game to end the season is inexcusable.
