I think the title says it all. Miikka Kiprusoff was outstanding last night in propelling the Calgary Flames into a tie for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference after a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche.
This blog will be a touch shorter after my child tried to electrocute me last night! Nothing like a few million volts running through you to get your attention. At least it happened after the game.
The Flames and Avs were both a little tentative to start and you could tell both teams were feeling the pressure. Colorado had the edge in play in the first period but they went to the dressing room scoreless after one.
Calgary really took it to Colorado in the second period and were rewarded when Nigel Dawes roofed one on Craig Anderson converting a good cross ice pass from David Moss to take a 1-0 lead. Anderson however did hold Colorado in it and kept the score 1-0 after two periods.
Heading into the third Calgary made a push early and were rewarded when Rene Bourque tipped in is 26th of the year on a point shot from Cory Sarich giving Calgary a 2-0 lead with 17 minutes left to go. Cue the Flames going into the prevent defense that almost bit them in the backside again, as the Avalanche drew within one as TJ Galiardi finished a nice pass from Chris Stewart to pull Colorado within one goal. The Avalanche kept the pressure up the rest of the period but Kiprusoff stood tall and made at least three 5 star saves to keep the Avs from tying the game.
The final buzzer sounds and the Flames win 2-1 and are tied with Colorado with 89 points. Both Calgary and Colorado have tough schedules to end the year however the Avalanche have a game in hand, and hold the tie breaker.
Calgary next goes to Chicago on Sunday afternoon and will need to find a way to bury some demons in order to come out of Chicago with two points they desperately need!
Have a good one!
