It’s The Day We’ve Been Waiting For. I Think…

Finally. 48 hours after Boston / New York is shoved down the collective gullet of the baseball fan (and really, is it right to make the World Series winning team have to open the season on the road? I don’t think so), and 24 + hours after seemingly EVERY other team got to play, the Orioles are less than 2 hours away from beginning the 2010 baseball season against the Rays of Tampa Bay. Less than 2 hours from making all of those Spring Training questions and making them into regular season fodder for call in radio shows and self important blog posters.
We have gnashed our teeth over Brian Roberts’ back, Jeremy Guthrie’s pitching, Garret Atkins and Miguel Tejada’s lack of production, Nolan Reimold’s injury recovery, and 100 other things. We have tried to temper our expectations on the development and progress of Adam Jones, Felix Pie, and Matt Wieters as well as Brian Matusz, Brad Bergesen, and David Hernandez (let alone the arms, legs, and bats that are in AAA and AA, waiting for the chance to get out of the bus leagues).
So, how are they going to do? Well, I am no Jimmy the Greek (I am going to take the “under” on the number of people who are going to get that), and I am not going to go calling the World Series right now (Red Sox over Cardinals in six), but I am going to go out on a limb and say that the team goes 79-83 (give or take a game or two), but it will not be enough to save Dave Trembley at the end of the season (but he will be moved into some position overseeing minor league development, which is his strong point).
And where does this leave us, and the team? It seems a bit simplistic, but all we have left to do is follow the team. Now we can only cheer the good plays, wince at the bad ones, play “armchair manager” when a pinch hitter or relief pitcher is (or isn’t) used, and (PLEASE) try not to let too many Yankees and Red Sox fans invade Camden Yards.
So cross your fingers, rally your caps, and buy me some Boog’s and a beer and meet me in the cheap seats this year, because we are going to have some fun.
