Robertson, Cantu help Marlins snag Opening Series from Mets

Following Monday’s opening day 7-1 defeat at the hands of Johan Santana, many Marlins fans questioned the sloppy defensive team in the field that surrendered 3 errors in the sixth inning alone of game 1. This has been an issue that has plagued the team for many years. The teams 106 errors last year was the 3rd highest among NL teams.

A couple of wins and a series victory later and its amazing how a team outlook can change. Stellar pitching from newly acquired Nate Robertson coupled with the potent bat of Jorge Cantu who is slowly molding himself into a Met killer (a la Pat Burrell, Derek Jeter, Chipper Jones) and the Marlins are off to a pretty good start.  Cantu went 4-13 in the series, collecting 3 doubles, 1 homer and 3 RBI.

The Mets dismal offense made Robertson look like Cy Young on Thursday night, who went 5 innings yielding 6 hits, only 1 run and 4 strikeouts.

The Marlins sit a top the NL East at 2-1 with a share of the division lead with the Braves and Phillies who both took 2 out of 3 in their first series as well. The Fish return to Florida for their home opener against Joe Torre and the LA Dodgers. The Dodgers were losers of 2 of their first 3 games against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
