The Twins finished their opening two road series in Anaheim and Chicago with a hot streak going 5-2. They now open up the brand new Target Field with much anticipation as the Twins play their first outdoor home game in 29 years. If you are as old as me you can say you have been to games once played at Metropolitan Stadium which is now called the Mall of America. Young people can’t wrap their minds around the idea that the Twins and Vikings used to play there. But in 1982 they moved to the then much anticipated Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome ironically now called The Mall of America Field at the H.H.H. Metrodome.
They would have 2 World Series victories at that dome with a minor league grown team of youngsters with names like Puckett, Gaetti, Hrbek, Brunanski, Reardon,Viola, Winfield, Knoblach, and Morris. That’s 2 more World Series indoors than outdoors but I think that comes down to one thing and that’s the way the Twins have been growing their talent for the past 35 years. The 1987 and 1991 Twins had Kirby Puckett who told his teammates to jump on his back and he’d carry them all the way. And he did. Now the Twins have a new crop of homegrown talent with names like Mauer, Morneau, Cuddyer, Blackburn, Kubel, Span , Slowey and Baker. They have added some free agents like Thome, Rauch, Hardy, and Hudson. Only time will tell whether Mauer can carry this team on his back to another World Series victory but they are the favorites in the A.L Central and if they can get to the playoffs and beat the much hated New York Yankees, there’s a good shot that it will happen again.
