Opening Day, Opening A Can Of Wupass

It was a bit of karma.  The record for most runs scored at Petco Park had been 15 back in 2008, a feat accomplished by…the Atlanta Braves.

So when Opening Day came to Petco Park, the San Diego Padres decided it was time to refurbish a somewhat tarnished opening to the 2010 season.  Their record of 2-4 was not the way the team wanted to start off.  Sure, the Diamondbacks are a good team, and the Rockies aren’t slouches, either.  But still, the offense had appeared and disappeared like a bunny at a Doug Henning show.

Then came Opening Day.

And the 4th inning.

10 runs.  Yes, you read that correctly, 10 runs in one inning.  A record-tying performance.  Heck, even the pitcher Kevin Correia threw in a hit and two ribbies.

Kyle Blanks, among the smorgasboard of offense, still managed to stand out as he turned in a spectacular, three-hit, five-RBI day.

It was a game of abundance, and Padres fans are hoping that the seventeen run downpour won’t result in a corresponding future drought.

But hey, sometimes karma works against you, too.
