Former Leafs in the NHL play-offs

Just because the Toronto Maple Leafs are coming off their fifth consecutive campaign without a postseason appearance doesn’t mean there aren’t those with connections to the blue and white still bidding for a chance to raise┬áthe Cup.

Let’s take a look at former Leafs who will have a role in this year’s postseason, along with who will make a difference and who the Leafs wouldn’t mind still having around. Please note: teams with no former Leafs have not been included in the list below.

New Jersey

Martin Skoula

Adam Mair

Alex Ponikarovsky

Tuukka Rask

Hal Gill
Dominic Moore

Andrew Raycroft
Kyle Wellwood

Mathieu Schneider
Lee Stempniak

Brad May

Los Angeles

Fredrik Modin

Wade Belak
Steve Sullivan

Darcy Tucker

  • Few of these players are likely to have much of a role with their current team in the postseason, although Lee Stempniak has been on fire since joining the Coyotes at the trade deadline. In the 18 regular season games Stempniak played in the desert, he matched his goal output (14) from the past 62 games played with the Leafs.
  • Even as Toronto re-signs Jonas “the Monster” Gustavsson [1], it still stings to see Tuukka Rask thriving in Boston. Ironically, the Leafs’ return on the disastrous Rask trade, Andrew Raycroft, is also on a play-off roster as the back-up to Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo.
  • One guy who could be a surprise contributor is Freddie Modin, a veteran scorer on a team that will need extra punch up front against Luongo and the Canucks.
  • And yes, I realize that listing Martin Skoula is kind of cheating, but he was, in fact, a Maple Leaf for one glorious day.
