Jorge shows what Cantu CAN DO

Over the past 2 weeks, many South Florida fans have been scratching their heads following the tremendous outburst of production from 3B Jorge Cantu. Only thing is the head scratching is being done by Tampa Bay Rays fans as to how their team shipped the young slugger to Cincinnati in 2007.

Cantu’s RBI double in the 5th inning of Thursday night’s 10-2 romp over the Reds extended his new major league record of consecutive games from the start of the season with at least 1 hit and 1 RBI to 10 games. Cantu broke the record the previous game which was 8 games, that dubious honor had been held by George Kelly, Willie McCovey, and Tony Oliva. His production at the plate has carried the marlins to a very respectable 6-4 start and sole possession of 2nd place in the NL East.

Team ace Josh Johnson finally lived up to his hype and showed the form he had in 2009 that made him an All-Star. After starting the season with 2 consecutive poor showings, Johnson propelled the Marlins to a 4 game series split with the Reds after pitching 6 effective innings, surrendering only 1 run on 5 hits and 1 walk. He seemed to have much more control of his pitches in this outing and was throwing very hard. The impressive performance dropped his ERA from a surprising 6.30 over his first 2 games down to 4.50.

The Marlins have been providing the league with close drama filled games so far in 2010, enjoying only 2 games determined by 2 or more runs. One of the offensive injections has been the play of CF Cameron Maybin. We are finally starting to see signs of the hype that has surrounded him for awhile as most thought he would be a shoe-in for Rookie Of The Year honors at season start last year. Heading into Friday’s action, Maybin is tied for the team lead in hits with 13, a homer, 2 RBI’s 2 stolen bases and an impressive 6 walks. In all 54 games last year he played he totalled 17 walks.

The Fish now hope to sink their teeth into the belly of division rival and leaders, with a 3 game series in Philadelphia against the Phillies for an early season 1st place battle. The series is the start of a 9 game road trip for the Marlins.
