With the NHL and NBA playoffs underway as well as the NFL draft right around the corner this coming week I thought I would start a weekly blog with quick hits in point for your Sunday. Lets get to it!
Seven of the eight NHL playoffs series are tied at one game apiece. With the Hawks and Preds going tonight I would imagine all eight series will be tied after the opening two games. This is extraordinary when you think of the difference in points during the regular season between the 1 and 2 seeds versus the 7 and 8 seeds. It just goes to show you, you need to learn to win in the playoffs as it’s a different brand of hockey. Both the Caps and Sharks are in for a long series as both their opponents are getting better goaltending.
Speaking of the Sharks, Joe Thornton continues to pull his disappearing act. He was terrible for Team Canada when the chips were down and once again he is doing nothing for his team in the playoffs. I don’t think there has been a player in the NHL over the last 20 years that has been paid as much as him yet has performed so poorly at key times for his team. He is nothing but an overrated player!! If I was a Sharks fan I would demand to management to trade him.
The NBA playoffs are underway and the Heat/Celtics series looks to be the one to watch in the East. It has star power and both teams have the ability to light it up offensively or play a tight defensive game. Yesterday it was the latter as the Celtics defeated the Heat 85-76 but it was the postgame remarks that already has the hate on for both teams as Quentin Richardson of the Heat said Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett are “actresses” after the late fourth quarter brush up. Gotta love opinionated players!
On the MLB side of things it already looks like a long season for the Baltimore Orioles and Houston Astros. The Orioles are 1-11 and are currently riding a nine game losing streak while the Astros started the year 0-8. The 162 game season can’t end soon enough for these squads.
Lastly, the NFL draft takes places Thursday night for the first time ever. The first round will be center stage for an entire evening with the rest of the draft running a few more days as it rolls into Friday night and most of the day on Saturday. Personally, I can’t understand why the St. Louis Rams would select QB Sam Bradford out of Oklahoma over QB Casey Clausen. Winning a Heisman trophy doesn’t guarantee success with Bradford winning it 2 years ago and the body of work for both QB’s would lend an edge to Clausen who has far more pro potential after playing in a prostyle offense for 3 years at Notre Dame.
Today has a full slate of games in the NHL and NBA playoffs along with the usual dose of 15 games in MLB.
Enjoy your Sunday.
