Nolasco and Robertson pitch in as Fish take 2 of 3 from Phils

The Marlins entered the weekend series versus the Phils at Citizens Bank Ballpark with a respectable 6-4 record thus far this year. Not bad but considering the competition, The Mets, Dodgers, and Reds it’s nothing manager Fredi Gonzalez would write home about. Florida’s first real opportunity to test how elite they can be in the National League East would come against the N.L. Champs, the Philadelphia Phillies.

After dropping the first game of the series Friday night 8-6 in front of a packed house, the Marlins impressively rebounded to take the next two games and the series and were led by the saavy pitching of righty Ricky Nolasco and southpaw veteran Nate Robertson. Nolasco went the distance in a 5-1 gem on Saturday night and Robertson combined with Burke Badenhop and Leo Nunez on a 4 hit shutout Sunday to close out the series. Robertson was impressive going six and one third innings in 55 degree weather at Citizen’s Bank Ballpark keeping the league’s most potent offense off the scoreboard.

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a hundred times already, PITCHING is the key for this team and getting to the next level. Silencing the bats of the Phils line up to a mere 1 run over 18 innings is an inconceivable thought yet the Marlins pitching staff made it a  reality and stunned the Philly crowd in the process.

Dan Uggla cranked his 3rd homer of the season in the 2nd inning and that was all Robertson needed to best Phillies lefty Cole Hamels who equally strong.

The series victory leaves the Marlins just a half game from the top spot in the N.L. East. The Marlins now head down to Houston, home of the N.L. Central bottom dwellers at 3-9. A strong showing for the Fish this week could significantly shift the scale a bit in the East.
