They’re Not Saying “Yikes”, They’re Saying “Ike”

The Ike Davis era officially began last night as the ballyhooed first baseman flicked a single over Cub second baseman Jeff Baker’s head in his first MLB at bat. Met fans will all remember where they were at that moment. (I was on my couch with a cold beer, which should be fairly easy to remember or guess).
While Ike’s Citifield hello may not have had even a fraction of the excitement of Atlanta rookie Jason Heyward’s majestic 3-run bomb in his first at bat, it does give beleaguered Met fans something to be hopeful about. Davis showed good plate coverage and a potential to find a way to get a hit in a big spot, aka that most elusive of qualities: clutch-ness. So we may hopefully see some of Ike’s power in the immediate future, but last night’s 2-for-4-with an RBI performance is probably still the highpoint of the Mets dismal start so far.
The Mets bizarre 20-inning marathon with the Cards Saturday definitely exposed some weak hitting up and down the Amazin’s lineup. Their ineptitude, even hitting against second basemen and catchers, was difficult to watch. Which is why, as we enter Ike Era Game Two tonight, the best thing would be if the Ike excitement carries over to the Jason Bays and David Wrights….
