As reported by various media sources, the Toronto Maple Leafs are close to, or have signed 22 year old Finnish goaltending prospect Jussi Rynnas. The 6’5″, 205 lbs. prospect posted a 2.50GAA and 0.929 SV % in the Finnish SM-Liiga. The contract is rumoured to be a 2 year deal, with the big Euro reporting to the AHL Toronto Marlies to split time with incumbent James Reimer.
I hope Francois Allaire gets a bonus for every goaltender he lures into the Leafs organization – that’s 3 by my count now. A little younger and a little more raw than Jonas Gustavsson, Rynnas looks to work on his technical game on the North American rink before being NHL ready.
Brian Burke was rumoured to be competing with upwards of 18 clubs for Rynnas’ services, beating out the Dallas Stars (one more time) for another Euro goalie prospect. BB continues to show there is more than one way to rebuild a team, and continuing to stock the cupboard with experienced players a little closer to being NHL ready continues to accelerate the time it will take to make the Buds competitive again.
More to come as this story continues to break.
