From top to bottom, the Edmonton Oilers’ organization is swimming in mediocrity.
That “mediocrity” has cost another coach in the system his job, with the Edmonton Oil Kings announcing Head Coach Steve Pleau and Assistant Coach Rocky Thompson have been fired.
Under Pleau and Thompson, the Oil Kings have an overall record in three seasons of 67-116-12-21 including a berth in the playoffs in their second season since re-entering “The Dub”. This year, the Oil Kings had the WHL’s second worst record behind the Prince George Cougars.
Team GM Bob Green said he felt it was simply time for the team to go in a different direction. Green, who is currently in Belarus scouting the 2010 IIHF World Under-18 Hockey Championship, will begin the search for a new coaching staff upon his return to Alberta.
In the meantime, Edmonton will play host to the 2010 WHL Awards on April 28, which will be followed by the WHL Bantam Draft on April 29.
