Hughes Comes Up HUGE!

Phil Hughes no-hit the A’s for 7 1/3 innings and struck out 10 batters en route to his second win this year. Johan WHO?
Clearly Hughes surprised everyone with his stuff last night, including the A’s. The Yankees ended up winning 3-1. (Hughes allowed a single to Eric Chavez in the eighth and then Joba allowed the run to score. Mariano Rivera picked up his sixth save of the year.)
So all those Hughes Doubters (and I admit to being one of them) what now?
This is definitely a good sign but the season is long. It’s unlikely the A’s will let him own them the next time. Mowing down Oakland in April is great, but what about Boston in September, or the Angels or Phillies in October?
So did the Yankees make the right call in keeping Hughes and not going for Santana? Definitely from an age perspective they did. Hughes will be 24 in June. Santana just turned 31. And to harken back to a prior blog, young pitchers are often forced to develop while at the major league level, when in the past they could work things out in the minors.
I know this for sure – Hughes’ season looks promising, but it won’t be without hiccups. And if I were Javier Vazquez, after last night I’d be looking over my shoulder.
