Rams are on the clock…is Bradford their guy?

It has been going around online for a while that with the #1 overall pick, the Rams will select QB Sam Bradford from Oklahoma. I agree. This is the type of move you have to make for a team without a franchise QB. Over the past year, here on prosportsblogging.com, I had written how I thought Bulger would get his game back together, but that wasn’t the case. His release two weeks ago proves this point.
Anyways back to the draft. Now that the Rams will have their new franchise QB in tow, I expect them to get some skill to help him on offense. A wide receiver like Demayrius Thomas (if he falls) or Golden Tate would be a great pickup early in the second round.
Tate, with his ability to run after the catch, would be great to have for a QB like Bradford, who doesn’t have an amazingly strong arm.
For defense, the Rams could use a defensive line help, linebackers, and a quality corner. A name like DT/DE Brian Price from UCLA , who has been mentioned as a guy with 1st round value, could be available in the early part of the 2nd round.
For the middle rounds, obtaining a starting outside linebacker to pair with middle linebacker James Laurinaitis and obtaining a quality corner would be ideal. The Rams haven’t had a good corner pretty much since they selected Dre Bly in the 1999 NFL draft.
You need good corners to win in this league which is increasingly becoming all about the passing game. Just look at what premier shutdown cornerback Darrelle Revis of the NY Jets, and all the matchup problems he creates. A shutdown corner is crucial for success on defense in the league today.
Overall, the Rams need more skill. This roster is made primarily of unproven players, role players, and needs an injection of star quality talent. If the Rams take Bradford at #1, they will get this star quality talent. However, it remains to be seen if they can find it in the other positions of need as the draft continues.
Final note. With the Rams having the 1st selection in every round, they will be a coveted trading partner. Since there is a day break between the 1st and 2nd round, teams will be jockeying for position to make a splash and land the 1st pick of day 2 of the draft. Keep an eye on this.
Enjoy the draft!
