Twin’s Win First 5 Series of Season

After Francisco Liriano threw his second gem of the season to beat the Indians yesterday, the Twins have now won all 5 series this season.  If they beat the Indians at Target Field today they will earn their first sweep of the year.  The Twins have so far scored 5 or more runs in 12 of their 15 games. The pitching has been strong but the hitting has been stellar, averaging 5 runs per game.  That means if the pitchers can keep their ERA below 5.00 and the hitters keep scoring more than 5 runs per game they will keep winning the majority of their games.

The Twins started out hot on their season opening road trip in Anaheim by losing the season opener but taking 3/4 and winning 3 straight against the heavily favored Angels.  They then traveled right to Chicago to take on the White Sox who most are no longer thinking will win the division this season. With the addition of big time pitcher Jake Peavy who, by the way, is winless with a 6.oo ERA for the last place pale horse, it was almost a no brainer to pick the Sox as division winners.  Not this season, these Piranhas are for real.

The Twins then came home for their first ever home opener at the new Target Field playing the Eastern Division power house Boston Red Sox.  The Twins won the opener at the new ballpark and the joint was jumpin’.  It was such a party atmosphere that you would have thought you would have fallen asleep and woken up at some kind of futuristic Wrigley Field.  Nobody wanted to leave.  They lost the second game of that series but won the rubber match on Wednesday.  They then had 3 games against the forever bottom dwelling Kansas City Royals and won 2/3.  Now after 2 games and 2 wins against the hapless Cleveland Indians, the Twins hope to win today for the sweep before they head out on the road again.

They travel down to K.C. for 3 games this weekend and then out to play the Detroit Tigers, now the Twins strongest rival in the American League Central.  They finish the road trip off with a rematch at Cleveland at the once best new ballpark in baseball, Jacobs Field.

In first place and the second best record tied with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays behind the World Champion New York Yankees, the Twins have a chance to put a lot of distance between them and the division rivals below them after the upcoming road trip.
