Record Road Trip Puts Rays on Top

Coming off a 9-1 road trip, the best in franchise history, Tampa Bay sits atop what is arguably the toughest division in baseball, one game ahead of the Yankees.

Keep in mind that in 2006, the Rays won three road games in the entire second half of the season. They are no longer the expansion patsies of the AL East. It is a long season, but things are definitely pointing in the right direction for the Rays to make the playoffs. Mind you, Boston will probably not play as badly as it has been forever, but if the Rays can keep distancing themselves from the pack, they could very well be playing fall ball.

Tampa Bay is back home to take on Toronto, Oakland and KC in the friendly confines of Tropicana Field. This only bodes well for the team.

Additionally, on Friday the team is set to announce a five-year extension with outfielder Ben Zobrist.

Carl Crawford ranks among the top 10 in the league in five offensive categories while Carlos Pena does so in two, but it’s really the Rays’ pitching that has been stellar. Matt Garza is 3-0 with an 0.75 ERA to lead the AL in wins and earned run average and James Shields’ 21 strikeouts rank him ninth.

Rays fans – What do you think? Is this team as good or better than in years past or is Tampa Bay just off to a hot start?

I will be pinch hitting on the Rays blog until a full-time starter can be found. You can also catch me blogging with the enemy, covering the Yankees, too.
