Note: I will be doing my complete Draft Recap next week
Quite a week for the New York Jets…they imported a hated villain and shipped out a local hero.
Earlier this week, the Jets signed free agent defensive end Jason Taylor to a two year, $13 million contract. Taylor, a former All-Pro has been absolutely reviled by Jets fans over the course of his career. He has engaged in memorable wars of words with coach Rex Ryan and has referred to Gang Green supporters as “classless idiots” to the media.
He brings a pass rushing skill that the Jets currently lack and should be able to fit the rotation just fine. However, fans should not be expecting the dominant Taylor from five years ago. He has had numerous injuries since then and is now just a complementary piece.
The other big move of the week was sending running back Leon Washington to Seattle in exchange for a 5th round pick at this year’s draft. The move was precipitated by the selection of USC’s Joe McKnight to fill the “scatback ” role.
In all honesty, I hate this move. McKnight, though talented, is injury-prone and does not possess the same degree of speed/toughness that Washington brings to the table. Washington was never fully appreciated by New York and this move will eventually blow up in their faces.
