Game 5 was back in Phoenix the Red Wings were in a must win situation and avoid having to win 2 back to back games they would need to win this game to go to Detroit in game 6 with the series lead.
Period 1 saw 3 penalties one carrying over to the second to put Detroit on the power play, none however would convert into a goal. Drew Miller would score and even strength goal off Kronwall and Stuart at 17:04 to put Detroit in front. Jimmy Howard would make 7 saves so a quiet period for him but entertaining none the less.
In the 2nd period things would somewhat reverse as Detroit would take 2 penalties by Zetterberg and Datsyuk at that. Ed Jovanovski would score his first at 9:45 from Aucoin and Lombardi at even strength which would tie the game 1-1 and that would hold into the 3rd.
Finally in period 3 was all Detroit in scoring, 3 goals were scored Holmstrom would score off a rebound from a Niklas Lidstrom shot from the blue line. Just over a minute later Datsyuk would net his 3rd giving the Wings a 3-1 lead with over half the 3rd period gone. Zetterberg would add a final empty net goal and give Detroit the win and the series lead.
Things will now switch back to Detroit and it will be the last game in Detroit for the series, Game 6 can be the final game for Phoenix, no one can say they didn’t put up a fight as they have given the Wings a run for sure. Looking at the other side of the coin, should Phoenix win a final showdown in the desert will take place, in my opinion Detroit has all the momentum as Detroit has won the last 2 games very aggressively 3-0 and 4-1 respectively and they look like the Wings that made the finals for the last 2 years. We will see how things go tomorrow afternoon at 2pm eastern time Game 6 in the D!
