Gutsy Avalanche eliminated by Sharks in six games

After putting up one hell of a fight, the Colorado Avalanche as predicted by yours truly were ousted in six games by the San Jose Sharks losing Game Six by a score of 5-2.

A Dan Boyle own goal gave the Avs a 2-1 lead in the series and momentum but in fact it may have woken up the Sharks. Game Four was hotly contested and had the Avs managed to win the game in overtime the series would perhaps have gone differently. Instead, a Joe Pavelski overtime winner tied the series at two and the Sharks never looked back.

Game Five was controlled by the Sharks as they peppered Avalanche goaltender Craig Anderson with shots and unlike Game Three their would be no heroics as the Avs were soundly beaten 5-0. While the Avs mustered a better performance in Game Six even building a 2-1 with 15 minutes to go in the game, a dreadful last half of third by the Avs saw the Sharks score on two consecutive shots and score two empty netters to ice the game.

While hopes may have been high after the events of Game Three, the Sharks deservedly moved onto the next round of the playoffs, simply because they played the better hockey for the majority of the series even in the games they lost especially Game Three.

With the playoff exit, Avalanche fans are disappointed without question but they really shouldn’t be. Yes, being eliminated from the playoffs is never good, but few expected them to even make to the big dance. Consider the fact that perennial contenders such as the Minnesota Wild and Calgary Flames both missed the playoffs in a tough Western Conference.

Anderson showed that when push comes to shove in the playoffs he is able to carry a team barring he doesn’t bombarded with shots every single night. The Avs young players will continue to develop and the future likes bright in Colorado.

With the season over, Avalanche management will now move onto the draft and free agency. While the Avs depth at forward is quite good, a true number one defenceman is needed and veteran Adam Foote is not getting any younger.
