Broom Go The Braves

Three runs in three games is just not going to cut it in this league. The start of a 6 game road trip began in New York to take on the Yankees ugly little sister, the New York Mets. Are the pitchers really this far ahead of  the hitters? Getting runners on hasn’t been the problem, but driving them in seems to be Atlanta’s Kryptonite.

In game number 1 of 3 Kenshin Kawakami (0-3) was hit with his 3rd straight loss to start the season. Kawakami let up 6 hits, and 3 runs in 6 innings of work. Everyone knows that Kenshin is not Tim Lincecum. In fact the kid has been doing a pretty decent job on the bump despite his record. The Braves have to start scoring runs, and take the pressure off of their pitching staff.  Heyward really needs to stop striking out. Someone needs to sit the kid down and tell him to stay within himself. He has had far too many games this season striking out 3 or more times. If you put the ball in play good things are bound to happen. This goes for everyone except Troy Glaus. He either grounds into a bases loaded double play, or gets robbed of a home run.

Game 2 was much of the same. You simply cannot post 1 run, and expect to win a major league baseball game even if it is against the Mets. It really was the same story different day as Jair Jurrjens only surrendered 4 hits, and 3 runs in 6.2 innings of work. Atlanta left 11 men on base in game 2. The Bottom line is that the Braves need to start playing with a chip on their shoulder. You can’t be getting outplayed by divisional opponents in every aspect of the game.

Game 3 ended in the top of the 6th due to torrential rain. Atlanta was down 1-0 at this time when the umpires rightfully called the game. I really didn’t expect Atlanta to be able to push a run across the plate anyways. They need to take a quick look in the mirror, and decide whether or not they want to make a run at this thing. I know it’s a long season, but I think every series (especially divisional games) are very important.

Getting swept by the Met’s is the equivalent of pounding sand, or chewing on glass. Atlanta needs to realize that the games are not won on paper, but by which team executes better on that day. As of right now the Braves are being out executed in fielding (which has been atrocious), hitting with RISP, and pitching.

I don’t expect pitchers to hit above the national league average which is .177, but the Atlanta pitching staff is a combined 0-30. I know it might be asking a lot, but they at least need to start getting bunts down, and moving runners along.

Atlanta starts a 3 game series tonight against Albert Pujols and the St Louis Cardinals. Tim Hudson takes the hill to try and revamp this Braves team.
