Are The Hotel Mattresses Lumpy?

The last time I wrote the blog the Seattle Mariners had just swept Baltimore and had moved into a tie atop the AL West. Four days later things have changed. The Mariners are now 3 games back of the A’s in the division and are now 2 games under .500. However many things have stayed the same.

Ichiro and Gutierrez continue to lead this team offensively as the only two batters on the squad that are hitting over .300, and are really the only two that even threatening being close to the .300 mark. While Chone Figgins, is only hitting .179 at least his OBP is up to .318, which is not nearly high enough either but is keeping his season from falling into ‘epic disaster’ status.

The starting rotation has been good so far on the road trip giving the team a chance to win each time out. Ryan Rowland-Smith had an adventure in the first game of the trip but did enough to hold the M’s in the game. Doug Fister threw another gem in game 2 of the Chicago series but David Aardsma got tagged for three runs in the bottom of the 9th to blow a save. In the third game the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead for Jason Vargas and it turned into another loss. Finally last night in the first game of the set against the Royals Felix Hernandez had another quality start but the bats could not get him any offense.

Seattle has two more games in Kansas City before coming home to take on the Texas Rangers. This team has to get some more offense and the bullpen just has to be better consistently if the M’s plan on challenging for the division. 2-9 on the road just won’t cut it, and the coaching staff had better get this figured out soon!

Have a good one!
