Drafting Birds for the Nest

The NFL Draft is where dreams are made a reality and for teams it is where they find key pieces to their puzzle.  For the Ravens, it was no different than any other NFL Draft: make shrewd moves and quality picks to bring home to Nest.

With only 5 picks entering draft day because of the Anquan Boldin acquisition, the Ravens were in a peculiar place with their first pick at No. 25.  What was The Oz, Ozzie Newsome, to do?  As the draft picks continued to fall off the board, it was clearly apparent that Oklahoma State wide receiver with issues, Dez Bryant could ultimately fall into their hands.  But, The Oz had other things on his mind as he traded down with the desperate Denver Broncos for more picks.

In the second round, the Ravens began their draft by selecting linebacker Sergio Kindle (Texas) and defensive tackle Terrence “Mount” Cody (Alabama).  Kindle should add more depth and skill to the pass rush opening opportunities for LB Ray Lewis to finish plays.  Biggon’ Mount Cody, could easily be mistaken for a Tubbie on the Line at 6’3″ and 354 lbs but he will pair with NT Haloti Ngata to form a heavy, hungry force on the D-line.

The Oz went offensive in the third and fourth rounds selecting TE Ed Dickson (Orgeon) and Dennis Pitta (BYU).  Todd Heap was at home smiling for this much needed relief after his 2009 season.  The Ravens rounded out their draft with 5th round selections WR David Reed (Utah) and DT Arthur Jones (Syracuse) and 6th round pick OT Ramon Harewood (Morehouse).

Overall, The Oz played the draft game by making more out of less.  However, the glaring need for help in the secondary at cornerback and safety was not found and could be detrimental if Domonique Foxworth and Fabian Washington aren’t 100% come September.  In the meantime, let’s see what the rooks bring to the Nest this summer.
