I like Backstrom to a ton and would take him over either of your aforementioned name but the thing I had an issue with is calling him a bargain at that price. Which to me means he could get more money, I think it’s a fair deal but not a bargain.

The contract comparisons are Paul Stastny – 5 years, $33 million – and Jason Spezza – 7 years, $49 million. I take Backstrom over either of those guys in a second.

And I think the player comparison is more like Oates playing with Hull. His numbers changed when he went to Boston – more goals, less assists, steady in points.

@Ryan, do you really think Niklas is a bargain at $7 mill a year if that’s the case?

Do you think he deserves more then $7 mill? I disagree that he is a bargain and I think 6mill would be suffice for a player of his capabilities. IMO he is a pt per game player without Ovechkin which is still damn good.

Of course his numbers are inflated by Ovechkin, that’s like saying Rob Browns’s numbers were not inflated playing with Lemieux or Kurri’s goals were not inflated by Gretzky.

Is he worth $7 million a year? Absolutely, he’s a bargain at that price, any team in the league besides maybe Phoenix with their situation would sign him to an offer sheet at that price, I was fearing something like $82 over 10 years on an offer sheet. Pure two way center, 100 point scorer. Are his numbers inflated playing with Ovechkin? Harder to say. He defers to Ovechkin an enormous amount, so I think he’d still be a stud playing on the 2nd line. Where he truly benefits is Ovie being the focal point of the defense. If he were the man on a weaker team he’d see a lot less ice. I’ll get a post up after the press conference.

I have heard that Nicklas BAckstrom will sign a 10 year $69-70M deal tomorrow. Is he worth a $7M cap hit? Also are his numbers inflated by playing with Ovechkin?
