Original Yankees Driving the Team

Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, and Andy Pettitte have a lot of years in pinstripes among them. (Only Pettitte hasn’t been a Yankee for his entire career when, as David Letterman put it, “He went to run a Dairy Queen for a few years”). Certainly their seasoned outlooks on the game help immeasurably in the Yankees’ clubhouse, but lately on the field, they are playing better than ever.
Pettitte, who turns 38 next month, is 3-0 with a 2.12 ERA and 25 Ks in five starts. At this pace he could win 20, for the third time in his career.
Rivera, 40, is tied for second in the league in saves with seven, but in nine innings, over 10 appearances, he’s not given up a run, and has scattered three hits.
Posada,38, is batting .310 in 17 games, when he’s never hit .300 over the course of a season before.
And then there is Jeter, 35, whom Ozzie Guillen referred to as “God” after he went 3-for-4 with a homer, triple, four RBI and two runs scored to beat the White Sox in the first matchup of a 3-game series. Jeter is batting .330 with 31 hits in 21 games.
So, what does this all mean? Well, the “old” guys are definitely setting the example and they’ve got a lot of life in their games. While the Yankees still trail Tampa Bay in the standings, their consistent approach is keeping them in the hunt. They took two of three from Baltimore and look to clean up against the Sox.
The veterans picking up the team early in the season bodes well for them. Despite Javier Vazquez being horrible and a slow start by Mark Teixeira, the Bombers are on a steady course to the post-season.
I have to note that watching the White Sox broadcast of the game makes me a bit queasy. The broadcasters, Steve Stone and Ken “Hawk” Harrelson, actually use “them” and “us” and cheer for Chicago during the game. That seems kind of unheard of these days. Whatever happened to “No cheering in the press box?”
