Must Win for the Celtics

Celtics came out of the locker room ready to play in game 1. They had the perfect game plan. Be aggressive. But then the Celts let it all slip away in the second half. Cavs went on a run in the third quarter with Mo Williams providing the spark, and the Celtics didn’t have an answer. Lebron was great in the 4th quarter and finished with 35 points, including the dagger, a 3 pointer that stretched the lead to 8. Can we finally stop talking about his elbow? Apparently, it was fine.

The Celtics can’t afford to play only a half or 3 quarters tonight. They have to play a full 48 minutes if they want to tie the series 1-1 before they come home for game 3. They had their chances in game 1 but they couldn’t close it out. Pierce was awful down the stretch. The Celtics look to Pierce to finish games and he just couldn’t’ find his shot. There is no way Pierce has a repeat performance like that in game 2. No way. I expect Pierce to be driving to the hoop right from the opening tip off.

The Celtics should do exactly what they did in the first half of game 1. Push the ball up as quickly as possible and catch the Cavs in transition. Rondo was magnificent in game 1 and if he can somehow have a repeat performance with guys actually running down the court with him, the Celtics will win. There were a few times in game 1 where Rondo pushed the ball but had no one to pass the ball to because they were still running up the court.

Lebron and the Cavs will be ready. This is a must win for them as well. As the favorite, the Cavs want to go up 2-0 before going on the road. Defense will be the key tonight. Team defense is the only way to contain Lebron. And the Celtics can’t lose focus on the other Cav players. Tony Allen will likely see more playing time tonight for defensive purposes. Big Baby will play an important role as well and hopefully can stay out of foul trouble.

The Celtics starting 5 are better than Cleveland’s starting 5, in my opinion. That’s why it’s a must for Pierce and Ray Allen to step up tonight, and history says they will. The Celtics need the starters to carry the team. The veterans will need to come up big.

Tonight’s game should be an instant classic. Both teams match up very well. Both teams are hungry. If the Celtics can pull off a win tonight, this series has 7 games written all over it.
