Jason Bay is Driving Me Crazy

Like “jungle love” in that Steve Miller song, Jason Bay has been driving me mad and making me craaaaaazzzy. It pains me seeing Jason strike out over and over in big spots, just whiffin’ away up there.

I feel like when Bay was in in Pittsburgh, playing in an empty park, he could just groove away and take big swings and be totally relaxed, and knock the tar out of more than his share of pitches.  Am I saying the bright lights of New York are making Jason press?  Didn’t he play phenomenally (for a while anyway) at the equally demanding Fenway? Its puzzling, I really expected better and wonder how deep the slump will get.

During the eight game winning streak it seems like Bay was coming out of his season long funk.  Even though his bright spots were still interspersed with those confounding strikeouts!  Bay dropped a lovely 0-for-5 in the series opening loss to Cincy.  The spotlight will only grow brighter so Bay either suddenly clicks, or the rest of the team hits so well he can casually start hitting when no one is noticing or….we’re going to see a lot more whiffin’ and sulkin’.

A random thought in the weekend….what is with the excessive recycling of nicknames in sports?  DOC Hallady?  Please, there’s only one Doc in baseball – Gooden’s baseball card actually said “Doc” and not “Dwight”…well some years anyway.  I know there was a Doc Ellis and another Doc before him probably, but still its a weak connection to the last name, I mean the real Doc Holliday would be Matt Holliday who’se  name is spelled with an “O” and not an “A”.  Plus Doc was Doctor K, which was more badass by far.  Calling Roy Halladay “Doc” is about as imaginative as someone at work calling me “Marky Mark,” which I hate.

And if you need another example, its a disgrace that a football player could come into New York calling himself “LT.” Just a disgrace!  Doesn’t anyone want to be original and make their own legend?
