Wednesday afternoon Craig Conroy was on the local sports radio station here in Calgary the Fan 960 with Rob Kerr and Boomer (two of the best radio hosts out there in my opinion, that are not named Dan Rakusan) Connie sat in with the boys for a few hours talking the season that was. If you have never had a chance to listen to Craig talk I highly recommend going to www.fan960.com and finding him on audio on demand.
Conroy has always been one of the straightest shooters, and legitimately nice guys in the world of professional sports. I also suspect that he will have a long career in the broadcast booth when he does decide to hang the skates up. I’m going to go through a couple things that Craig talked about that I thought was news worthy.
First off Craig is not ready to retire. He said he was injured most of the year (I think most of us figured that out Craig) and hopes to play at least a couple more years.
He also said obviously he would love to finish his career in Calgary, but would go to another city to play if it couldn’t work here. He also suggested money would not be an issue, which I wholeheartedly believe.
As for the team he went over a few topics. First off Mike Cammalleri. Mike and Craig are good friends, and texted and talked through his negotiations with the Flames and other teams. Also currently during the playoffs.
Point blank Flames fans. Mike Cammalleri would have signed a 5 year deal in Calgary at $5M per season but it is believed that the Flames best offer was $4M a year for him, as Mike’s size was a concern for the Flames management. (really? Darryl REALLY!?!??!)
Craig did not believe the internal issue stories of Dion Phaneuf was as bad as was reported. He stated that neither he or Jarome Iginla had an issue with Dion. However Conroy did concede that there may have been an issue between Dion and Robyn Regher, but they kept it professional.
When it came to Olli Jokinen, Craig send that there was never an issue with Olli and anyone on the team. He was traded simply because the numbers were not being produced playing with Iginla.
Craig also talked about Jarome Iginla’s comments about waiving his NTC if asked. And he said Jarome and himself talked afterward, and Jarome had told him ‘well what was I going to say?’ It was a tongue in cheek hypothetical question and he gave an answer that IF he was asked he would consider waiving it. Craig does not believe that Jarome will play anywhere else in his career.
Craig also talked about head coach Brent Sutter an was adamant on one thing. Coach Sutter never handcuffed the offense, he even in video sessions would say stop cycling the #$%# puck so much and someone take it to the net! Conroy also suggested that the team never really replaced the 50 goals lost by Cammalleri and Bertuzzi (Bert being another player that would have resigned for a reasonable number according to Conroy)
I again highly recommend checking out his appearance, as it is very refreshing to hear some straight shooting out of a player. I’ll be the first to say I would have Craig Conroy back on my team but it would have to be near the salary floor. (say $600K) I’ll let you read as much or as little into his comments, but the one thing I take away from it was that the Flames management is still a little stuck in the past when in comes to evaluating players.
Have a good one!
