The Twins got out the brooms and swept away the second place Tigers with a 5-4 win at Target Field Wednesday. They started the 3 game series only 1/2 game up on the Tigers and are now 3 1/2 games up. This was all done without superstar catcher Joe Mauer who is nursing a sore heel which doctors say won’t require surgery but more rest.
Justin Morneau got things started in the bottom of the 1st inning nailing a double off the wall in right center field and knocking in Denard Span. This is Morneau’s 19th RBI who has been on a tear all season. He’s now batting .354 after going 1-2 with 2 free passes.
Kevin Slowey improved his record to 4-2 and an ERA of 3.93 going 5 2/3 innings, giving up 7 hits. The Twins bullpen was again solid with Crain, Guerrier, Duensing and Rauch teaming up to nail down the Tigers in the last 3 innings.
Joe Mauer will start testing his sore heel today but will not return to the lineup until he’s 100%. Mauer who has been sidelined since Friday with a deep soft tissue bruise on his left heel, said he was going to play some catch out on the field. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire also said that Mauer could possibly take some swings in the batting cage to test his heel.
The 19-9 Twins next take on the pathetic Baltimore Orioles who are 7-21 and the worst team in baseball. The Twins will start Carl Pavano, who has completed at least six innings in four of his first five starts. Pavano has allowed just two home runs this season, and he’s struck out 22 batters while only walking three.
