The Red Sox Roller Coaster Continues

The Red Sox season has been a roller coaster ride. Two weeks ago, the Sox swept Toronto in a three game series on the road. Next they traveled to Baltimore and got swept by the worst team in baseball causing Red Sox nation to officially push the panic button. What happened next? The Red Sox traveled home and played a four game series against the LA Angels and swept them. So if history were to repeat itself, one would expect the Sox to get swept by the New York Yankees. So far history is repeating itself.

Last night’s game against the Yankees was a mystery. How could Josh Beckett go from looking the best he has all season to imploding innings later? He started off striking out five of the first six batters he faced with excellent command of his pitches. He pitched 3 scoreless innings and then gave up a 3-run shot to Nick Swisher in the top of the forth. Bottom of the forth, David Ortiz hit a sacrifice fly, driving home JD Drew, making it 3-1. Then in the sixth he flat out lost it. He gave up four hits, two walks (one intentional), two hit batters, and six runs that inning making it 9-1. Ortiz drove in his second RBI of the night in the bottom of the sixth. The Yanks went on to globber the Sox 10-3. The Yankees had 1o runs on 11 hits. The Red Sox had nine hits on the night but couldn’t drive in the runs.

The only good that came from last night is the from the bats of J.D. Drew, Victor Martinez and David Ortiz. The last seven games, Drew is batting .426, with 6 RBIs and 10 runs. In Martinez’ last seven games he is batting .360 with 7 RBIs.

Today, the Yankees clobbered the Red Sox 14-3. The star of the game was Mark Teixeira. He launched three home runs driving in five RBIs. The top of the third the Yankees went ahead 2-0 on back to back singles from Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez. The Red Sox went ahead with three runs in the bottom of the third on a solo home run by Darnell McDonald and a two-run shot by Martinez. They were the third homers of the season for each. Backup catcher, Francisco Cervelli also had a monster day for the Yankees going 3 for 4 with 5 RBIs. Things got so bad for the Sox they surrendered by putting in Jonathan Van Every to pitch. There was no point in wasting the bullpen.

Let’s see if Boston can muster up a win tomorrow for all the moms on Mother’s Day. Maybe the pink bats will give them the lift they need. It should be a great pitching matchup. A.J. Burnett (4-0) 1.99 ERA vs Jon Lester (2-2) 3.93 ERA. I will be there with my mom to watch this wild roller coaster of a season.
