The Mariners have now dropped seven in a row after another 8-0 loss this time at the hands of the Angels. The M’s had just come off of back to back sweeps. Getting rolled up by the Rangers and Rays respectively. Amazingly at 11-18 Seattle is still only 4.5 games out of the division lead behind the aforementioned Texas Rangers.
The offense is clearly the problem with this team and Mario Mendoza needs to be fired as the hitting coach. (I wasn’t aware he was ever hired in the first place.) Ichiro and Gutierrez are both hitting over .300 and Jack Wilson is still lighting it up at a whopping .253 batting average. However the next highest average on the team is Ken Griffey Jr. at a stellar (wait for it!) .216!!!
I’m quite serious Junior has the 4th best batting average of the starters on this team at .216! Casey Kotchman and Franklin Gutierrez each have 3 home runs so far. The Mariners as a team have hit 10 dingers this year. (yup 10) Gutierrez also leads the team with 16 RBI’s.
The pitching hasn’t been spectacular in the past week but it has been good enough to win a few games. I suppose the brightest spot for the entire team would be the return of Cliff Lee to the rotation. In two starts since coming back cliff is 0-1 but has a 2.40 ERA and has racked up 13 K’s while not issuing a walk.
Bottom line is this team needs to start hitting now! If the current group can’t get the job done with the sticks then it may be time to start calling some bodies up to at least push the starters for playing time. Otherwise I’m available for the league minimum and could bat .190 and fit right in, while saving the franchise a fortune.
Have a good one!
