The Ax Falls On Cockrell!

The following article is courtesy of TSN.ca I will just mention that in my own opinion it’s unfortunate when any coach or manager loses their job, however in this case I don’t know if the Seattle Mariners had much of a choice in firing hitting coach Alan Cockrell and replacing him with their AAA hitting coach Alonzo Powell.

The team is hitting .225 and has only managed 12 home runs this season after 30 games and an abysmal 11-19 record. To put that in perspective for a second Paul Konerko of the White Sox has 13 home runs this season. Now the onus will be on the players to start hitting the ball as they have replaced the hitting coach.

Here is the full article from TSN…

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) – The Seattle Mariners have fired hitting coach Alan Cockrell and replaced him with the club’s Triple-A hitting instructor Alonzo Powell.

Seattle entered Sunday second from the bottom in the majors in hitting with a collective .225 clip and in runs scored (94). The club’s .302 on-base percentage is also second-worst in the league.

The M’s are a disappointing 11-19 entering Sunday and last in the AL West after a busy offseason.

Seattle traded for outfielder Milton Bradley and first baseman Casey Kotchman, while inking free agent infielder Chone Figgins to a roughly $36 million contract. Ken Griffey Jr. also re-upped for a 22nd MLB season.

But things have not gone as planned. Bradley is hitting a paltry .214 and just this week asked management for help in dealing with personal matters. He has 24 strikeouts in 70 at-bats. Kotchman and Figgins are hitting .194 and .192, respectively, as two parts to Seattle’s starting infield. Griffey Jr., although, not a consistent starter, is batting just .216.

Powell will be charged with turning around the club’s hitting woes after serving the last two-plus years in the same capacity at Triple-A Tacoma. This is Powell’s 27th year of professional service in baseball. He spent the 2007 season as the Mariners minor league hitting coordinator. He also experienced a 19-year playing career and saw time in the majors with Montreal (1987) and Seattle (1991).

Cockrell was named Mariners hitting coach prior to the 2009 season. He previously served as hitting coach with Colorado (2002 and 2007-08).
