Pens next steps

There is not much to say about game seven between Montreal and Pittsburgh. One team came to play at 7:00pm/EST and the other around 8:30. Pittsburgh turned the puck over regularly in the first period and for a portion of the second while Marc-Andre Fleury continued his unspectacular play before being pulled in favour of Brent Johnson.

When Pittsburgh did start playing their brand of hockey it was just too late and that is simply because of Jaroslav Halak. Against any other goaltender Pittsburgh may have tied the game in the third but not against him, he was too”Halakian.” If Montreal can advance to the finals we could see the third player in 23 years to get the Conn Smythe despite not winning the cup.

J.S Giguere did it with Anaheim when they lost to the New Jersey Devils while Ron Hextall also won the playoff MVP award in 1987 after Philadelphia lost to the Edmonton Oilers. Halak could be up next for the honour.

Montreal was able to take advantage of Pittsburgh’s lack of depth on the wings and this may be something the team has to take a look at this off-season. Pittsburgh has $20 million invested in their top three centres and a change via a trade is not out of the question (look out Jordan Staal!).

Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin will continue to shoulder the offensive load for the Penguins while veteran Bill Guerin, who is 39 years young, will ponder his career as he is currently contract less in the NHL. Also up for grabs among forwards are Ruslan Fedotenko, who sparingly played in the playoffs this season, and pest Matt Cooke.

Fedotenko is likely done with the Pens while Cooke could earn another stint with his improved play in the playoffs. Alexei Ponikarovsky is a question mark going into next season as he did not have a good two series or stint in a Pens jersey (called it!) but is a useful big body if Guerin is not brought back.

On the back end, Pittsburgh has some big decisions to make about the future of some of their players. Sergei Gonchar, Jordan Leopold, Jay Mckee and Mark Eaton are all unrestricted free-agents heading into the Penguins golfing season.

With the signing of Kris Letang to a multi-year contract, Gonchar’s run in Steele town could be coming to an end as Pittsburgh could use his $5 million dollar cap hit to fill some holes. Mark Eaton, who is nothing more than a five or six defenceman, could be brought back for a price similar to his $2 million previous contract while Jay Mckee is a possible rotation player in the Pens core.

After Marc-Andre Fleury’s performance in the playoffs, a new goalie that could push him might be in order. Brent Johnson has been good and the Pens need to decide if he is capable of challenging Fleury in net. Johnson’s contract is now up which means we may see a new face in Pittsburgh’s goaltending tandem.

I thought Sidney Crosby looked tired or injured in the series versus the Canadiens because frankly, he just did not have any jump in his step. It is easily noticeable when Crosby is feelings good and during this series, he was not able to beat players one on one and was not the one man wrecking crew he was against Ottawa.

This may be because of Montreal’s play but that is just a hunch I have and I’m sure we will find out in the coming days. The grind of the past two seasons could have caught up to Pens or perhaps they did not have the drive for another run.

Regardless, Pittsburgh has some serious decisions to make on defence and need some more depth on the wings if they want to improve on this years showing. Also, Fleury…figure it out!!!!

Good stuff, Amit. I totally agree with you on the lack of depth at wings. It would be a big loss to get rid of Staal, but it would even out big time with some scoring depth.

I made a mistake, Brent Johnson signed a two year contract in April so there goaltending is set. What I should have mentioned is Eric Tangradi is a strong power forward who does play the centre position. He is with their AHL affiliate and had just shy of 40 points in 65 games this season. In no way can he fill the void of a Jordan Staal but it is another centre and Max Talbot has demonstrated the ability to be a centre so the numbers are there if they want to take that route.

If I was a Penguins fan I would like to see Malkin gone. For what he is being paid, yes, he is a great scorer, but sometimes the heart isn’t there. Crosby battled last night even though he made some mistakes. He’s still human after all, but Malkin didn’t seem to want it as much. Maybe Crosby was tired but Montreal played him so tightly the entire series. You could tell in the post game interview that he was pretty devastated and you know the heart is all there.

It’s hard to say trade one of the best offensive players in the league but getting a super star winger for Crosby might be the best option here. Crosby has proved that he can be one of the top goal scorers in the league and in past years he’s shown that he can be an excellent passer and offensive quarterback. Find a super star winger to play with him and I think this team would be better off.

Jordan Staal is too good to be playing on a third line. He is a top line center on a lot of teams if given the chance. He kills penalties, he’s fearless, he can score, etc. I would want to keep him at all costs. I can’t really remember a time when he’s made a mistake in his own zone, that’s really important.

Jay McKee is better than the contract he signed and I think teams will want him. He’s more than a 7th defenseman. I think Talbot can be a third line centerman for the Pens. If he keeps his game simple, skating in straight lines and checking, he’s at his most effectiveness.

There seems to be too much money in too few players. For the Penguins I think they could realistically have one great scoring line, one above average secondary scoring line, and then two lines of checkers. Only question in my mind would be if they can get enough good defense via free agency or trading to make this team another cup winner.

It’s not a bad notion, trying to trade Malkin. He would get a lot in return, even a lot more than Staal would net. I think the problem is everyone would be so afraid of “losing” that trade.

I think if you trade Malkin you have to get players that are young, proven and will stick around for a long time. Somehow I doubt this happens though.

Every team needs that “one-two” tandem on offense and Pittsburgh has that right now with Malkin and Crosby. Staal could play that second line role but because he has been a third liner his entire career and I am afraid he will have some issues in stepping into a prominent scoring role.

Regarding trade value, I think Staal could got not the same but a decent amount in return. He is not making “Malkin” money and there is that upside which is so appealing.

Staal is very good but is replaceable on their roster with the likes of Talbot and maybe even Tangradi who is a very promising prospect.

We have seen what Malkin and Crosby can do with the Tyler Kennedy’s and Pascal Dupuis’ of the world and a 50-60 point getter could be a great addition.

McKee absolutely is a player who could be in the topic six and will probably cost less than Mark Eaton.

As the fake GM of the Flames I’ll give you Kiprusoff, and Sarich for Fleury and Staal.

There would only be minor rioting here if that trade went down.
