Just wanted to share some stuff passing through my mind as these unpredictable playoffs continue to surprise hockey fans.
-I officially eat any and all disparaging words I have spoken/written about (this year’s) Habs. They have certainly earned a spot in the Conference Final with two unbelievable upsets.
-In continued grovelling, the tiny 1st line of Gionta, Cammalleri, and Gomez are playing way taller than their average height with a combined 41 points through 14 games.
-If anyone still says that Montreal should keep Carey Price over Jaroslav Halak, I would tell them to get their head examined. He may not be the biggest guy or have the projections of an elite goaltender like Carey Price allegedly does, but he is a big game goaltender.
-I know a lot of the blame will fall on Crosby and Malkin’s shoulders, but maybe now this team will think of getting some legitimate 1st and 2nd line scoring wingers to take the pressure off. The aging Guerin, inconsistent Kunitz, and milquetoast Dupuis/Talbot/Ponikarovsky/Fedotenko aren’t going to get the job done.
-Shop Jordan Staal! Not because he’s bad, but because the Pens don’t need a 3rd awesome center, they need a team.
-Could Rob “The Piece” Scuderi have made a difference? The Pens had plenty of offensive-minded defensemen, but no defensive stalwart to foil their opponent’s attack.
-Losing Marco Sturm is whatever; he had 0 points in 7 games. However, losing David Krejci has been brutal. The average age of Boston’s top wingers is 39 years old.
-However, kudos to both Mark Recchi and Miroslav Satan. Satan is enjoying a wonderful “F-you” to everyone who said he was done, and Mark Recchi is proving to be the next Chris Chelios. Who wouldn’t want to see Recchi win a 3rd cup with yet another team?
-Oh, and Boston might want to keep Vladimir Sobotka off the ice because he’s a minus-10 in just 12 games. That puts him in the running for the reverse-Conn Smythe trophy.
-How about Michael Leighton? He was a season savior for the Flyers after Emery went down and now he’s playing lights-out. Off the bench. In the playoffs. Incredible.
-Does anyone finally feel like the tide is in Montreal’s favor to play in the Stanley Cup Finals? They either play a weakened Flyers squad or a weakened Bruins squad next.
-That said, does anyone else feel like whoever it is that wins the Eastern Conference Championship will be severely outmatched by whichever Western Conference opponent they match up with?
-Biggest Surprises of the Playoffs so far:
3. Luongo follows up Gold Medal with second round flop.
2. Sharks don’t choke.
1. Canadiens upset both the Capitals and the Penguins. Incroyable.
Can’t wait for what the rest of these Stanley Cup Playoffs have in store for us!
