Revis To Become $20 Million Dollar Man?

According to recent reports, Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis is seeking a new contract, one that would pay him in excess of $20 million per year.

As my neighbor Carlos would say:  “Dang, yo….that’s a lot of cheddar!”

Indeed, Carlos..indeed.

Revis is basing his demand on the contract that the Oakland Raiders gave Nnamdi Asomugha, which pays him $45 million over three years.  (Revis should grasp the fact that he is attempting to negotiate with actual businessmen, not Al Davis.)

On the one side of things, Revis is unquestionably the best player at his position in the entire league.  The list of wide receivers who were tearing up the league until they ran into him and were shut down is now legendary.  When Revis plays, an entire side of the field is shut down and the Jets have the luxury of dropping more bodies into pass coverage to contain any other threat the opposing team has in it’s passing arsenal.  That gives their defense a great deal of flexibility.

On the other hand, the star cornerback needs to realize that, unless he wants New York to end up like the Raiders (a perennial loser), then he must not tie up that much money.  If he does, it’s improbable that the team would be able to surround him with enough quality to complement him.  As good as Revis is, he cannot win games by himself.  No man is an island.

Not even “Revis Island.”
