Andre Ethier to the DL

If this season’s woes are any indication, the “DL” can be renamed the “Dodger List”. The Dodgers ended the very little amount of suspense surrounding right fielder Andre Ethier’s broken pinkie today, sending him to the 15-day DL. Ethier joins starter Vicente Padilla and shortstop Rafael Furcal(who should be back soon) in the L.A. infirmary. Already this season, the Dodgers have had to go without left fielder Manny Ramirez and catcher Russell Martin, on top of Padilla and Furcal.
Ethier broke the finger during batting practice prior to Saturday night’s game against the Padres. The Dodgers were hoping Ethier would be able to avoid the disabled list and get by with a splint around the front knuckle. However, Ethier hasn’t been able to do much beyond holding a bat and it appears the finger is far too sore to heal without some legitimate time off. Ethier’s spot in the lineup will probably filled with a platoon of ancient slugger(and I use that term loosely) Garrett Anderson and righty Reed Johnson. The team is also expected to call up “The X Man”, Xavier Paul from Triple-A Albuquerque, who will probably also see playing time in the Anderson/Johnson platoon. Paul hit .276 with one RBI as a fill-in for Ramirez last month.
In other news, the Houston Astros fell victim to the book of Ely last night, losing 6-3 in Los Angeles. Dodgers hurler John Ely put on another stellar performance, striking out eight, walking none and only giving up two in seven innings(To be fair, it helps that he was facing the Astros, who pack as much punch as Calista Flockhart). For those scoring at home, Ely has not given up a walk in his last three starts. Second baseman Blake DeWitt drove in two on a pair of triples(which were aided by Astros outfielder Hunter Pence’s inability to hit the Square button in time and let two DeWitt frozen ropes bounce off his Roberto Duran hands of stone as he tried to make the diving catch). Third baseman Casey Blake also chipped in two RBIs.
The series finale takes place tonight as Hiroki Kuroda battles Bud Norris at Dodger Stadium. Tomorrow, the Dodgers will host the first-place Padres for two games before kicking off inter-league play with a three-game home-stand against the Detroit Tigers. The Pods put some distance between themselves and the Giants last night with a 3-1 victory and are currently two games up on the third-place Dodgers.
