Bills Preseason Schedule Is One of Extremes

The NFL released finalized starting times for preseason games in the AFC East. Buffalo’s preseason shapes up as follows:

  • Aug. 13 – (AWAY) at Washington Redskins, 7:30PM
  • Aug. 19 – (HOME) versus Indianapolis Colts in Toronto, 7:30PM
  • Aug. 28 – (HOME) versus Cincinnati Bengals, 6:30PM
  • Sept. 2 – (AWAY) at Detroit Lions, 7:00PM.
  • If the schedule makers were looking to forge a balanced preseason test for the team, then the Bills’ schedule was done by the same guy who figured if you put your head in the oven and your feet in the freezer, on average, you’re about the right temperature.

The bills sandwich games against two of 2009′s last place division teams around games against division winners Indianapolis and Cincinnati.

Here’s a brief look ahead at how the preseason will play out for the Nickel City fans:

Game One against the Redskins should be a confidence builder and a chance to showcase the talents of C.J. Spiller.

Game Two is being played in Toronto so Canadian fans who watch the CFL can see what real football looks like. The Bills’ best hope in this game is that the Colts get stopped at the border by Homeland Security for having too many offensive weapons.

Game Three should help further lower regular season expectations and highlight the Bills’ continuing offensive line weaknesses as Cincinnati rolls into Ralph Wilson Stadium. The potential for a serious beating in their own house is a real possibility for Buffalo in this game. An early clue to the domestic abuse in store might be if the Bengals show up with bail money and wearing wife-beater t-shirts.

Then again, it would be hard to tell the difference between that and a regular Bengals team meeting.

Game Four at Detroit is a make-or-break game as the Bills build toward their regular season home opener on September 12 against the Miami Dolphins. With a strong draft, the Lions should be better than they’ve been in a few years. A preseason win would provide some momentum for the Bills going into the regular season while a loss could be an early indicator of how far the Bills still have to go.

Let’s focus on the positive, though. Football season less than three months away.

    That’s a good thing.
